Mole Removal

What are Moles?

Moles are a type of skin growth that occur when cells in the skin, called melanocytes, grow in clusters instead of spreading throughout the skin. Moles can be flat or raised and can vary in size and color, ranging from tan to brown to black. They are usually round or oval and can be smooth or rough to the touch.

Most moles are harmless, but some can be a sign of melanoma, a type of skin cancer. It's important to regularly examine your skin for any new or changing moles and to have them checked by a dermatologist if you notice any changes in size, shape, color, or texture.

Why Have Your Moles Removed?

Cosmetic reasons and medical concerns are the top reasons to have moles removed.

Moles can be removed for cosmetic reasons if they are located in a prominent or noticeable area, or if they cause self-consciousness or embarrassment. Moles can sometimes rub against clothing or jewelry and cause irritation or discomfort, in which case removal may provide relief.

If a mole has irregular borders, is changing in size or color, or is bleeding, it may be a sign of skin cancer, and removal may be recommended to prevent further complications. If a mole is suspected to be a melanoma, a type of skin cancer, it may be removed for biopsy to determine if it is cancerous.
